Youth Field Hockey Program
Youth Field Hockey General Information
Practices are generally Tuesdays and/or Fridays at Foley Field in Belchertown (behind the police station). Games are typically played in Belchertown or in neighboring towns, including Northampton, Agawam, Longmeadow, Westfield, Holyoke, and others.
The youth program is open to girls and boys in grades 1 through 8. Presently there are 3 teams to accommodate these age groups.
There is also a Mini Stix program open to ages 4-7.
Signups are run through the Belchertown Recreation Department.
Mini Stix- Ages 4-7
The mini stix program is offered to children ages 4-7. The focus of programming at this age is to learn basic skills, game play and mostly having fun.
The program will use a bigger, lighter ball (a GO ball) than traditional field hockey and utilize lighter, plastic sticks (GO stick), specifically designed for the youngest players.
The program runs on 4 Saturday mornings, from mid- September to October for with 75 minute sessions. The program concludes with an invitation to attend a varsity field hockey game and join the high school players, who will help facilitate this program, for warm ups and to sit with them during the game.
Bantams- Grades 1-4 (Instructional Field Hockey)
Bantams are our beginning players who are just learning the game. They play on a smaller field, 7 v. 7. At this age level we teach basic skills and really try to have a lot of fun. We teach the basics of field hockey, let athletes try different positions, learn how to play on a team, and grow a passion for field hockey in these young athletes.
The bantam program is an instructional program similar to that offered for soccer which would means that they practice one day per week and have one game per weekend commitment to help ease players into the sport.
Juniors- Grades 5-6 (Recreation League)
Junior players are introduced to full field play which is 11 v 11. At this age, players become more competitive, start to prefer certain positions, and spend more time with our older players to really become part of our field hockey family.
Juniors have the opportunity each fall to participate in a competitive tournament, the Valley Cup.
Seniors- Grades 7-8 (Recreation League)
Senior players are the highest age group at the youth level. This is a more competitive level of play where athletes begin to learn more advanced skills, develop key team elements to play, and also serve as role models to the younger players in our program.
Seniors have the opportunity each fall to participate in two competitive tournaments, the Valley Cup and the Bement Tournament.
